Pilates Reformer feature
I must admit, I love Pilates Reformer. I’ve been taking classes for more than three years and the personal benefits to me have been improved muscle tone and strength (better body shape as well), I no longer suffer from back pain, I’ve improved my posture, have more energy and it allows me to release the stresses of work. Rachel Crompton, Group Exercise Director at Elixr Health Club has been one of my instructors since I joined. She describes Pilates as “an exercise system that has been developed specifically to augment core strength and stability, and improves your general muscle tone, alignment and posture. It is ideal if you are interested in increasing strength and muscle tone without adding bulk.” One of the reasons I’ve devoutly maintained my attendance is because the programs are always changing. The stronger you become the most resistance you can add to your movements and the more advanced the movements become.
Pilates isn’t just for the ladies either, more men have been joining Pilates classes on a regular basis to help improve their core strength and weight training techniques. Robert Stevens who recently discovered Pilates says, “I used to think it was just for women and I was amazed at how sore I was after my first class. Pilates has really helped me rebuild my shoulder muscles after a sporting injury. It’s also helped me identify weaker muscle groups and flaws in my weight training technique.”
Pilates Reformer - the Reformer machine enables you to perform a vast range of exercises, using the Reformer’s springs to provide both assistance and resistance throughout the moves. The reformer focuses on developing alignment, posture and balancing your whole body. Reformer tones your entire body, and teaches your muscles a more comfortable, efficient way of moving, sitting and standing. The Reformer is different to a Mat class because your weight is always supported by the Reformer machine, so you can adjust resistance levels to whatever is right for you.
Pilates Mat - classes focus mainly on challenging and developing your core strength. You’ll work against your own bodyweight and gravity to challenge your mind and body. This is an ideal way to begin improving your coordination skills and enhancing your strength, especially your spinal muscles and core areas.
Pilates Ring and Roller - classes are Mat-based with the use of props (foam rollers, Pilates rings and elastic bands). Classes focus on developing core strength and challenge the body’s stability a little more making them ideal for those seeking a more advanced workout.
