8 ways to find ‘me time’ this holiday season

The end of the year is usually jam-packed with family and social obligations. And while these events are, for the most part, enjoyable, they can also be draining. So, it’s important to take care of yourself and to make space in your diary for the things that recharge and re-energise you.

Here are eight ways to take some ‘me time’ in the midst of the season’s mayhem.

1. Plan a spa visit

Whether that’s for a massage, facial or pedicure, or all three – opt for whatever makes you feel most relaxed and refreshed. Consider it a festive season gift to yourself.

2. Make time to meditate

The days can go by really quickly during the holiday season, so if you’d like to slow things down and feel more grounded, consider waking up a bit earlier each morning to spend some time meditating. It’s a great way to start your day feeling calm and relaxed.

3. Meet up with a friend
It’s lovely to spend time with family during the holidays, but if you feel in need of a little break, set aside some time to meet up with friends who energise and rejuvenate you. So, schedule a coffee date, meet for drinks or head out for a movie you’ve been wanting to see.

4. Disconnect for a while
Thanks to laptops, tablets and mobile phones, we’re always connected and available. And while this connectivity has obvious benefits, there are also plenty of benefits in simply disconnecting for a while and letting yourself enjoy activities that don’t require WiFi – like getting into the garden, going for a picnic or enjoying an afternoon nap.

5. Don’t skip your yoga or Pilates class
While it’s tempting to let your exercise routine go out the window during the holidays, try to be consistent and make your regular Pilates or yoga class. Both these disciplines help to energise your body and calm your mind and are particularly helpful if you’re feeling slightly stressed. Or, if you haven’t tried yoga or Pilates before, now could be the perfect time to sign up for one of our introductory courses.

6. Start a good book
There’s nothing quite like diving into a new book at the start of the holidays. So, pick up that novel you’ve been meaning to get to all year, or check out some of the new releases or highly rated titles on Goodreads.com. They announce their annual list of the best books of the year in December, so you’ll be spoilt for choice.

7. Head to the beach
Got an hour or two to yourself? Go for a walk on the beach and enjoy the sun, fresh air and beautiful views.

8. Catch up on a series
There’s something very indulgent about watching back-to-back episodes of a show you really enjoy. So, if there’s a series you’ve been wanting to catch up on but haven’t had the time, block off a few hours to enjoy some uninterrupted, guilt-free episodes. Or, if you don’t have a lot of time to spare, set aside an hour in the evenings that’s just for you, so you can relax, unwind and enjoy the show at your own pace.
