Consistency over perfection with Grainne

GIVING UP ON THE “ALL OR NOTHING” APPROACH: CONSISTENCY OVER PERFECTION

If you find yourself repeatedly going hell for leather on a strict training and clean eating regime, and then throwing in the towel after day 4 or 5 because you’ve slipped up and “cheated”, then this is the mindset change you need!  I want to share some practical insights on giving up the “all or nothing” approach and focusing on consistency, especially when it comes to fitness and nutrition.

1. Daily Training Habits:

  • Instead of striving for an intense daily workout, aim for consistency with a manageable routine that suits your lifestyle and ability,  as well as your goals.  Set aside specific time slots for exercise, even if it’s just 15-30 minutes a day
  • Incorporate activities you genuinely enjoy, whether it’s brisk walking, Pilates, or gym workouts. Consistency is easier when you look forward to your workouts.
  • Don’t be too hard on yourself if you miss a session. Life happens, and it’s okay. Resume your routine the next day without self-judgment.

2. Balanced Nutrition:

  • Embrace a balanced approach to eating. Instead of strictly adhering to a restrictive diet, focus on mindful eating and portion control.
  • Allow yourself occasional indulgences without guilt. Remember, it’s about overall progress, not perfection. Enjoy that piece of cake or a favourite treat without overthinking it.
  • Prioritise nutrient-dense foods like lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. These choices fuel your body and support consistent energy levels.

3. Goal Setting:

  • Set achievable, short-term goals that align with your long-term objectives. Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small.
  • Track your workouts and meals in a journal or using a fitness app. This provides clarity on your consistency and helps you make adjustments when needed.
  • Stay adaptable. Life’s unpredictability is a given, so be ready to adjust your fitness and nutrition plans accordingly.

4. Building Support Systems:

  • Share your fitness journey with friends, family, or a workout buddy. Having someone to cheer you on and hold you accountable can boost consistency.
  • Seek guidance from a personal trainer. They can help you create a tailored plan that aligns with your busy life and ensures you stay on track.

5. Practicing Self-Compassion:

  • Understand that perfection is unattainable. Give yourself permission to make mistakes and experience setbacks.
  • Treat yourself with kindness and compassion. A positive mindset goes a long way in maintaining consistency.

Remember, the journey to a healthier, more balanced lifestyle is all about staying committed and kind to ourselves as we move forward. So whether you are striving for balance or simply on a self-care journey, know that consistency is the real secret to making positive changes in the long run.
