Member Profile: Luen Jacobs

This month, we posed a few questions to local DJ and Elixr member Luen Jacobs. Here’s what she had to say about work, workouts and music:

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I make chia seed pudding before I go to bed so sometimes I lie in bed in the morning until I remember it’s in the fridge. I don’t have a day job.

Can you tell us a little about what you do?

I am obsessed with curating music, so anything that allows me to show people new sounds. I DJ, work at a radio station, put out free compilations of Australian music and throw parties.

What do you love most about your work?

I like being my own boss and being able to make my own rules.

You recently did a campaign with adidas. Can you tell us about this?

I’ve been doing colabs with adidas since 2013, playing their events and wearing their shoes. I used to work for Vice magazine and I booked the music for the Sydney and Melbourne parties featuring DJ Neil Armstrong. Since then, the adidas Australia crew and I have been homies. The latest campaign was for the new NMDs, which are so sick. We shot in the city near Martin Place.

Why did you decide to join Elixr?

I have a bad back – probably from DJing – and I like that there are a lot of yoga classes on offer. I also love talking and the staff are always up for a chat.

Some of the things you love about the club?

I really like the steam room. I get bad skin sometimes and there’s nothing like the feeling of a workout followed by a steam room session to make you feel refreshed for the rest of the day.

Favourite form of exercise? Favourite classes?

I love Martine’s yoga classes and went on her Byron retreat over summer. I was a beginner when I started at Elixr, and while I’m not amazing now, Martine has given me the confidence to practise more often. Stretching in general is also total bliss. I have big stretch sessions at home while listening to Grimes.

Some of the benefits you’ve experienced since joining?

Flexibility and a better understanding of my body. I’ve also been on a big health trip in terms of what I put into my mouth, so getting both sides right is cool.

5 songs/artists guaranteed to be on your workout playlist?

Grimes, Branko, Ccolo, Sampa The Great, Jai Paul.

When you’re not working or working out, you’re…?

Watching documentaries about music. Or reading books about music.

How would you finish the sentence “I get a kick out of…”?

Talking about amazing female musicians on the radio at triple j when I know lots of people are tuned in.

What’s your favourite way to unwind?

Tea and a TED talk. Or a movie at Randwick cinema.
