Setting Up For Success With SMART Goals

Hey guys,

Can you believe it’s half way through January already?

The older I get, the quicker the time goes by, especially since I had my children.

If you are like the majority of the women I know, then you have thought about New Year resolutions, word of the year, or goals.

But before we dive into the goal-setting zone, I like to take a pause and reminisce about last year.

What went well for you?  What can you improve upon in 2024?

January is a great time for setting intentions and here’s my simple and effective guide to achieving your goals without losing your sanity:

The reason why we set goals is to give us direction and clarity.  You can’t get to a destination if you don’t even acknowledge that is where you want to go.  This is the method I use to coach others, and myself.

Setting SMART Goals:

Specific:

  • Define your goals. The clearer, the better. Instead of “exercise more,” try “attend two strength training sessions per week.”

Measurable:

  • Set parameters to track progress. Think in numbers or concrete milestones. It’s easier to celebrate victories when you can measure them. Eg A performance goal might be to do 15 push ups in a row. An aesthetic goal might be to fit into your old jeans.

Achievable:

  • Dream big but keep it real. Your goals should stretch you, not break you. Aim for challenges that excite and motivate, not overwhelm.

Relevant:

  • Align your goals with what truly matters to you. If it doesn’t resonate, it’s probably not the right goal for now.

Time-Bound:

  • Give yourself a deadline. A timeline creates urgency and helps you stay accountable. It’s your personal ticking clock.

I like to approach any new period of effort with a mindset that values our well-being. No guilt trips, just a healthy commitment to sanity and progress. Remember, it’s what you do regularly that defines who you become.
