The Missing Link in Bone Health: Gut, Hormones, and Nutrition
When considering bone health, most people focus on calcium. While important, it is just one part of a larger picture. Bone is a living tissue that is constantly broken down and rebuilt. Effective rebuilding relies on gut function, hormonal balance, and nutrient absorption.
To understand the importance of this interplay, let’s start with the gut. Your gut is responsible for absorbing key nutrients needed for bone strength, including calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin K. If digestion is compromised, even the most nutrient-dense diet may not translate into strong bones. Emerging research also highlights the gut microbiome’s role in regulating inflammation and influencing bone metabolism, demonstrating that gut health directly affects bone density over time.
Building on this, hormones are another critical piece. Oestrogen, progesterone, and cortisol all play a role in how bone is maintained. As oestrogen declines, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, the rate of bone breakdown can accelerate. This is why bone density changes are often seen during this phase of life. Supporting hormonal balance through nutrition, lifestyle, and stress management becomes essential.
Together with gut and hormone balance, nutrition ties it all together. Protein provides the structural foundation for bone, while minerals and fat-soluble vitamins support mineralisation and strength. Diets rich in whole foods, diverse plant fibres, and adequate protein have been shown to support both gut health and bone integrity.
When all these systems are supported together, the body can maintain strength, stability, and resilience over time, not just for performance, but for longevity.
In my upcoming workshop atΒ Built From Within: Bone Density for Life, we will explore how to bring these pieces together with practical, evidence-based strategies you can apply immediately.
