Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar Yoga was developed yoga teacher and author Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar. This practice focuses on the alignment of your posture with an emphasis on your anatomy. It is based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga. It emphasizes detail, precision and alignment through postures (asana) and breath control (pranayama). Props also play a role, such as belts, blocks, and blankets, as aids in performing asanas. The props enable you to perform the asanas correctly, minimizing the risk of injury or strain, and making the postures accessible to both young and old.
What Makes Iyengar Different
Making use of props (including belts, blocks, and blankets) to help achieve postures that students may not be able to achieve with limited of strength and/or flexibility. Iyengar focuses on:
- Sequences: The series of movements is planned follow a specific method to achieve a desired result.
- Duration: Longer holds than most normal classes which encourage activation of the deeper layers of the body.
- Technique: Precise body alignment and repeating poses to increase the awareness of posture and understanding of the benefits.
Many Iyengar students use the practice to relieve the stresses in the mind and body, while helping to energise the body and calm the mind.
