Elixr Swim School for kids and adults
Pre-school age – Little Rockets 3- 5 years
Did you know our roll-to-breath method for 3–5-year-olds is unique to our swim school? After years of teaching and observing various swimming techniques, we developed an innovative element called Roll to Breath, Roll to Swim. This trauma-free approach helps children learn to take a breath without fear.
You’ve probably seen videos of tiny swimmers falling into a pool fully clothed and rolling for a breath, and it’s truly amazing. However, what most people don’t realise is that these impressive skills are often taught through countless traumatic lessons, where children are repeatedly dropped into the water fully clothed and encouraged to fight for a breath.
Recognising the importance of survival skills for young swimmers, we developed the Roll to Breath method with a kinder, more compassionate approach. From the start, we’ve embraced a philosophy that creates a safe and nurturing environment where children can learn to roll and breathe without fear.
To enhance their learning experience, we don’t use flotation devices or platforms, which often crowd classes and hinder independent learning. Instead, we keep our classes small, with only two children per session. This ensures each child receives personalised attention and maximises the time spent on mastering essential swimming and safety skills, making their progress both effective and enjoyable.
Primary School age – Swim Stars 5-12 years
When should we give up swimming? Did you stop your children swimming too early? We get asked this question all the time, and I was previously on the ABC Sydney radio show discussing parental swimming lesson fatigue and why parents want to stop swimming early. What you may not know about is that I run two swim schools for over 15 years and have three children, ages 16, 18, and 23. So as a parent as you can imagine I have spent many hours poolside and quite a good insight into both sides of the equation.
Here’s the classic scenario. One day, when your child is old enough to go to the beach with their friends, which usually happens toward the end of year 6, how confident are you that you have equipped them well enough with swim lessons so that they can hold their own out the back or in a rip? Many people pull out around 7 years old to focus on art, dance, and other activities, forgetting that swimming lessons are a skill for life and could one day save their life.
For our family, one of the basic requirements for letting the kids go to the beach without a parent was that they could proficiently swim 2km in the pool or point to point at Bondi. This would enable them to have the stamina to swim to safety as confidently as they could if a situation were to occur. Everyone has a different parenting style and thank goodness we do. Some people let their kids go to the beach earlier than others, but either way, your children will ask one day.
